Interview techniques

I can't tell your child what to say, but I can help them decide how to say it .....

The courses aren't about putting words into their mouths; ultimately it's about building their confidence so that they can feel more at ease when talking about themselves to adults. Different schools operate their interview processes in a variety of ways. Some will focus on childrens' interests and personalities. Others will expect them to be well informed and interested in the world around them. In some cases they may be asked to do some mental maths or read aloud. All this can be daunting if children aren't prepared.

Interview techniques

The training focuses on three key areas:

  • boosting confidence - by giving the children a flavour of the types of questions they might be asked

  • deciding on key messages

  • how to communicate their key messages

I will conduct two interview role plays during a one hour session followed by a 20 minute debrief with both child and parent/s

In most cases, follow up sessions are only recommended if there is a long gap between interviews (i.e., first interview in October, last interview in January) or if you feel your child would benefit from further practice. We will:

  • recap previous learning points

  • practice the key messages

  • create further challenges such as mental maths and/or reading aloud or basic comprehension questions
